Officers to submit Varanasi re-development plan in a month
New Delhi: Varanasi, which remained neglected for decades under successive governments, is all set for a major transformation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi making this holy city his electoral turf.
Mr Modi’s dispensation is not just planning to convert Varanasi into a major destination of spiritual tourism but a centre for power generation and open up the holy river for passenger and goods travel.
The ambitious plans, some of which were part of Mr Modi’s campaign and BJP manifesto, were discussed at an inter-ministerial group meeting on Friday, which also constituted a committee under water resources secretary to come up with a detailed plan in a month’s time after which it will be put before the Union Cabinet for its nod.
Sources said the ministers would move a Cabinet note once the bureaucrats give their report. The Government wants to start the project of cleaning river Ganga and redevelopment of Varanasi at the earliest to send across a message it was serious about the issue.
