Kerala officials gear up for monsoon

Various departments are working in tandem for a disaster-free monsoon

Kollam: The district administration has taken steps to ensure a disaster-free monsoon this time. Special task forces have been appointed to help prevent the spread of contagious water-borne diseases. However, the areas hit by sea erosion including Thanni, are waiting for the construction of water- breakers.

The corporation has started work on ways to check the spread of vector-borne contagious diseases. “The corporation has appointed 125 new employees by giving them a remuneration of Rs 340 per day to enforce the work group. We have also asked the Health Department to be vigilant and check the spread of contagious diseases,” said Mayor Prasanna Earnest.

The Police Department has also come out with a list of instructions which drivers are to follow. Light vehicles should not follow heavy vehicles closely as it would hinder their vision due to the water spill from the tyres of heavy vehicles. The wipers and brake system of vehicles should be thoroughly checked. Vehicles are to go by the road borders and not drive off the roads.

However, the coastal roads in the district are under the threat of monster waves eating up the ridges including the boundaries. The project to construct break waters from Kakkathoppe to Thanni has been caught in red-tape. The Government had earlier given an administerial sanction of Rs 12.5 cr to construct breakers along the coastal area.

The IIT, Chennai, had also conducted a study and developed a base plan for the construction of break-waters. The institution is awaiting technical sanction from the Government. The State Government has also sanctioned Rs 80 lakh for the renovation of costal roads and is waiting for work on the breakers to be completed before taking up the road work.
