Take tough decisions, Prime Minister to secretaries

Do not be scared of making mistakes: Modi to 77 secretaries

New Delhi: At his meeting on Wednesday with 77 secretaries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the bureaucrats “not to worry about taking complex decisions”.

He reportedly told them: “Do not be scared of making mistakes. We are here to take decisions, and we may make mistakes. The point is that we should be action-oriented.”

The PM, who believes in taking swift decisions, made it clear “files should not be pushed around from one department to another in the ministries, and if possible, matters should be sorted out by talking among each other”. He then added: “If the problem persists, one can approach the Cabinet Secretary”.

The PM, who told the bureaucrats “to work without fear”, also made it clear there would be more interactive sessions. The PM’s observations and instructions, which were made in a meeting between him and the secretaries on Wednesday, were conveyed to joint secretaries and others on Thursday.

At his session with 77 secretaries at his residence, the PM also asked them to list their expectations from the new government. The secretaries told their junior officers that the PM wanted all official documents to be “simplified”.
