Many not happy with district split plan
Hyderabad: The proposal of the TRS government to increase districts in Telangana state from the existing 10 to 24 has been drawing mixed response from various quarters. Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has already made his intentions clear on increasing the districts on quite a few occasions earlier while addressing public meetings. He said the existing districts are “too big” and need to be divided to create newer districts for the convenience of public and administration.
The reasons being cited are Kerala state, which is spread over just 38,863 square km has 14 districts. Only Mahbubnagar district with 18,432 sq. km and Adilabad district with 16,128 sq. km together almost equals Kerala. Telangana with an area of 1,14,840 sq. km has just 10 districts making it difficult for people to travel to district headquarters to avail of various government services.
As per the proposals prepared by the TRS, the new districts that are sought to be created include Siddipet and Sanga Reddy in Medak district, Wanaparthy and NagarKurnool in Mahbubnagar district, Suryapet in Nalgonda district, Bhadrachalam in Khammam district, Mancherial in Adilabad district, Jangaon, Jayashankar district in Warangal district, Jagitial in Karimnagar district. Also, there are plans of reorganising Nizamabad and Ranga Reddy districts by allotting some of the areas in both these districts to Medak district, Hyderabad East and Secunderabad.
In twin cities alone, the new districts being planned are Hyderabad Central, Charminar, Golconda, Hyderabad East and Secunderabad. The government has prepared a preliminary report on creation of new districts and is in the process of discussing the issue with the respective district collectors and other senior revenue officials. Chief Minister is expected to convene a meeting with collectors and revenue officials after the first session of Assembly to discuss the issue and finalise the new districts.
