Hyderabad: Former director-general of police B. Prasada Rao said that the united Andhra Pradesh police was one of the best forces in the country with the maximum restraint which the cops showed at the time of the Telangana agitation.
While addressing an audience at his farewell parade, Dr Rao said that it was his pleasure to serve as the last police chief of the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh.
Dr Rao, who has been transferred to the home department as principal secretary, was given a warm farewell by senior officials and personnel
of the police force in a farewell parade at Amberpet Police Grounds.
“In 80s and 90s, the Andhra Pradesh police effectively thwarted the Naxal threat. Many sacrificed their lives. Our elite forces, Greyhounds and Octopus, are still a role model for police departments of other states,” Dr Rao said, while praising the force.
He added that the faction menace in Rayalaseema, caste problems in Seemandhra, and communal issues in Telangana were effectively
controlled by the state police.
Dr Rao said that the police managed the situation without even firing a bullet during the Telangana agitation.
Speaking on the occasion, Telangana DGP Anurag Sharma said that Dr Rao was the one of the most upright officers in Andhra Pradesh, known for his integrity, discipline, and charming nature. He added that Dr Rao was the most popular police commissioner of Hyderabad.
He also praised Dr Rao for introducing welfare schemes for the force. Andhra Pradesh DGP J.V. Ramudu recalled that he had met Dr Rao for the first time during an interview in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and they had been good friends ever since.
