Need for increased safety in cyber world
Hyderabad: City sociologists claim that the increasing incidents of crime at social and family level due to various posts on social media call for strong monitoring in the cyber world.
Apart from the law enforcing agencies, companies should also be held accountable as they must ensure that any content, which is provocative or not in harmony with the law of the land, is not published on the website.
Satya Prasad, sociologist with Osmania University says, “Perceptions rule the world of social media. Hence, the words that are put up on the respective sites are perceived at different levels by different individuals depending on their maturity. In an open forum it becomes imperative to be cautious as sentiments when hurt can result in violence.”
While violence is strongly condemned, the issue is that the lack of control is further complicating issues.
Dr Shakuntala P., a sociologist, said, “We have a system in place which is free for all. Hence, an instant reaction, which may be regretted later, takes place. This has been seen in cases of cyber crimes. Gruesome acts are worrying, and presently the onus lies on the users to be careful, enhance security and ensure that their domains are not hacked. Also, users should make it a point to disclose very little personal information and not allow everyone to view personal information. Safeguards are present and they must be exercised effectively.”
