Modi model of teachers’ training for India soon
New Delhi: The Union human resources development ministry is set to become one of the first ministries in the Narendra Modi government to seek inspiration from Gujarat and attempt implementing the state’s model on training of teachers at a pan-India level.
The ministry is likely to implement the model, which involves continuous and rigorous training of teachers throughout their careers.
HRD minister Smriti Irani is understood to have asked officials to make a detailed study of the ‘Gujarat model’ so that it helps ensure its replication across the country.
The model also promotes training of teachers through information and communications technology.
It is understood that the step comes even as the Modi government wants to establish a robust and well-oiled education system in the country, which could help it turn students into trained professionals.
The BJP had also promised in its election manifesto that the highest priority would be given to address the acute shortage of teachers and researchers, quality of education and research, and the employability factor associated with most courses.
The Gujarat model envisages training of teachers of different subjects through computer studies of these subjects so that they are also able to replicate it in ICT-enabled classrooms. This practice is unique to Gujarat. Other states do not focus on ICT-training of teachers. It is also perhaps the only state to have a Secondary Teachers’ Training Institute.
