Hyderabad: Violent crimes increasing on trains

Attackers push people from running trains

Hyderabad: V. Vijay Kumar, a travelling ticket examiner (TTE), never expected that he would be pushed out of a running train while he was issuing a penalty slip to two passengers standing near the door. In his 20-year-long career, no one had attacked him in such a brutal manner. “After a brief argument, the two ticketless passengers agreed to pay, and I was writing the receipt. Suddenly, they pushed me out of the train,” said the 46-year-old TTE, who has now been shifted to a private hospital in Secunderabad.

Mr Kumar had caught two passengers without tickets in the general compartment of the Kerala Express on Monday as the train passed Jammikunta in Karimnagar. The enraged duo pushed him out of the moving train, and he suffered fractures on his head, hands and legs. Mr Kumar fell near a railway crossing. From there, a Railway guard and some farmers took him to a hospital in Hanmakonda.

A native of Warangal, Mr Kumar had boarded the train at Kazipet. The passengers, who were speaking in Hindi, initially refused to pay the penalty. “Vijay said the passengers were from North India and were going to Agra. The police has taken down the details,” said J. Srinivas, Mr Kumar’s brother-in-law. He added that Mr Kumar can identify the attackers. Meanwhile, Kazipet Railway police officials said they have taken two people into custody in connection with the case. “Two people from UP are in our custody, and we are trying to ascertain their identity,” said a senior police official.

In another case, an engineering student, Tribhuvan Teja, 19, was pushed out of a running train at Kazipet on Monday. Teja, who is doing B.Tech at Jaipur, was returning home. Teja was seriously injured, and is now in a Secunderabad hospital. Police said that he was about to get down at Kazipet when somebody pushed him from behind. Teja’s relatives said that after the fall, no one at the railway station helped him, and he had to call his father on his cellphone to get help.
