Maharashtra survey: 6,656 industries generate hazardous waste

Common facilities for management of hazardous waste have been set up at four sites

Mumbai: The State Economic Survey for 2013-14, tabled in the Maharashtra state legislature here, said that there are 6,656 hazardous waste generating industries in Maharashtra as on March 31, 2013. Common facilities for management of hazardous waste have been set up at four sites.

Major sites are located at Taloja and the Trans-Thane Creek Industrial Area of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in Thane district, Ranjangaon in Pune district and Butibori in Nagpur district, the survey said. The state has made it mandatory to install global positioning systems (GPS) in all containers carrying hazardous waste to ensure its proper disposal. So far, 102 hazardous waste transporters have installed these systems.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has estimated an annual electronic hardware waste of 0.5 lakh tonne and has tied up with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to establish an electronic waste recycling facility on a public-private partnership model. The MPCB has authorised 20 industries to build a recycling and dismantling capacity of 24,320 tonnes of electronic waste per year.
