Clerics say honour killing ‘un-islamic’

Pakistani religious leaders has declared “honour killings” to be a “highly condemnable”

Islamabad: A coalition of Pakistani religious leaders has declared “honour killings” to be a “highly condemnable” and “un-Islamic” action.

The All Pakistani Ulema Council has called a summit of leaders from all sects on Thursday, to discuss honour killings, following the murder of a 25-year-old pregnant woman, Farzana Parveen, outside Lahore High Court, reported Al Jazeera.

“A daughter is a gift by Allah. And the feeling of being dishonoured by your daughter is forbidden in Islam,” the edict, issued by the Council, reads. “Killing one’s daughter and humiliating them is a sign of ignorance.” Council’s secretary general Zahid Mehmood Qasim said that the decree “should serve as a reminder to those who kill their kin on the name of protecting honour.”
