Mallikarjun Kharge promises to do his best as leader of Congress in Lok Sabha

Kharge thanked Congress President Sonia Gandhi for her trust and confidence in him

New Delhi: Former Railways Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, who has been appointed as the Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, on Monday said that he will try his best to stand by the principles of the party.

"I will try my best to stand on the principles of the party. I will also try to protect the democratic norms," said Kharge.

Thanking Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Kharge said, "Sonia Gandhi has trusted me and has posed her confidence in me."

Earlier, The Congress party announced that Kharge would be representing the party in the Lok Sabha of the parliament.

"Sonia Gandhi has appointed Mallikarjun Kharge as the leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha," announced Congress leader Janardhan Dwivedi.

Kharge had earlier served as the Union Railways Minister in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government led by former prime minister Manmohan Singh.

The Congress performed poorly in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, managing to win only 44 seats.
