Action plan for smooth Kochi traffic

Service road widening, deploying more traffic wardens planned at Palarivattom

Kochi: The Roads and Bridges Construction Corporation, Kerala (RBDCK), the agency implementing the construction of the Palarivattom flyover, is chalking out a comprehensive action plan with the support of the traffic police to ensure smooth traffic flow through the NH by-pass.

It is doing so, taking into account residents' fears about regular traffic congestion during the construction of the flyover. It was pointed out that since a major portion of the traffic had been shifted from the city to the by-pass after the commencement of the Metro Rail's construction, effective steps were needed to avoid a traffic nightmare.

“We are drafting a detailed plan to minimise the difficulties caused to the public. However, there will be minor inconveniences that are naturally caused by construction works on busy junctions and roads,” said RBDCK Managing Director Mohammed Haneesh.

The main construction area will be at the centre of the NH, starting from the Indiavision office premises and ending in front of the Spice Board office. If the service roads are widened, traffic can be diverted once construction begins.

“Since construction is going to be taking place on one of the busiest stretches of NH, more traffic wardens will be appointed to help manage vehicle movement. Though the city residents will have to face minor inconveniences, the flyover is one of the much-anticipated projects which will help decongest the stretch. We hope the people will co-operate with us as it is an asset for the future,” added the RBDCK MD.

Meanwhile, the trader community and civic groups have welcomed the launch of construction work of the new flyover.

According to Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry sources, the four flyovers proposed at Edappally, Palarivattam, Vyttila and Kundannoor will mark a new chapter in the history of infrastructure development in the city.
