Cycling, a basic right?
Hyderabad: Another feather was added recently to the Hyderabad Bicycling Club’s cap with its chairman, D.V. Manohar, becoming one of the seven members of the World Cycling Alliance — apex body of all cycling federations across the world.
As part of the alliance, Manohar attended the annual World Cycling Conference in Australia last week. He says, “At the conference, it was decided that the WCA will take up the agenda with the United Nations and other agencies to get cycling recognised as a fundamental right. With this mandate, governments across the world will have to promote cycling in their respective countries.”
Manohar adds, “Now that I am on board, I have a platform where my advices will be taken seriously and we will receive financial help.” Sharing his plans to promote cycling in the city, he says, “We have already installed two bike stations and have a cycling track in Gachibowli. We have also planned another 60 km bicycling track, the budgets have been sanctioned and the routes have been identified; it should hopefully be ready by next year.”
