Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Urban Labs has developed a map named School Master marking the locations of government schools in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts. The project is aimed at giving a clear idea regarding the number of government schools.
As per the data mentioned on the website, there are about 3,000 schools in Hyderabad and 2,500 schools in RR. This includes primary, higher secondary, GHMC schools, Rail-way schools, and zilla and mandal parishad schools. The scheme is aimed at retaining these schools that provide affordable education for people in the public sector and to prevent them from falling prey to privatisation. The efforts will also ensure that the schools are protected from land grabbers.
Anant Maringanti, founder of the Hyderabad Urban Labs said, “Government schools have a long history of being great resources in any neighbourhood. The scene, however, has completely changed in the last two decades with a lot of private schools coming up. The government schools have been failing, and this failure can be attributed to the performance of students, teachers and infrastructure. But it is also general apathy. The land allotted to government schools is being monetised and schools shut down. Through this map people can get an idea about schools. This will help create awareness and build social literacy.”
