Western Ghat decision on June 4

Gadgil commission had earlier faced opposition from state governments over its recommendation

Panaji: Union environment ministry will take decision on reports prepared by the Madhav Gadgil and Kasturirangan panels on the Western Ghat at a meeting in New Delhi on June 4, the new environment minister Prakash Javadekar said on Saturday. The Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel, also known as the Gadgil Commission, had submitted the report to the Centre on August 31, 2011. It had faced opposition from states for recommending that almost three-fourth of the hills, including plantations, cultivated lands and large habitations, in the Ghats be turned into a restricted development zone.
