Microphones to restrain Rajasthan MLAs from using unparliamentary language

The new system can identify a member if he uses abusive language in the house

Jaipur: A new digital conference system on the lines of the Parliament has been installed in the Rajasthan Assembly. The microphones attached to the seats of 200 legislators would be able to detect each and every word spoken by an MLA even during pandemonium in the House.

There have been occasions in the past when a legislator got away after using unparliamentary language as stenos who record the proceedings could not apprehend who said what because of the uproar.

The mics too were unable to detect and pin down afterwards as to who said what. This sometimes led to a stalemate between the government and the Opposition.

The new system has 220 high-quality microphones, making it difficult for a legislator to take advantage of the din to use unparliamentary language without bei-ng identified or even when he speaks with his back to the mic. However, the MLAs can take a personal recording of their speech.

There is more to this system. It allows the Speaker or presiding officer to switch off all microphones except the chair, rendering the legislators inaudible. This will ensure peace in the House even if the MLAs shout at the top of their voice.

It has a request button for the MLAs for seeking the Speaker’s permission to speak. The new system also makes voting easy as the legislators can choose a button and the result would be displayed on the screen.

Also, there are some new features like option of choosing from 32 languages to hear the proceedings.
