Cops moot under-vehicle surveillance

Hotels have such systems in place, it is imperative for all complexes to install

Chennai: In a move to improve security arrangements at places in the city where crowds gather, the think-tank of city police is proposing installation of under-vehicle surveillance system (UVSS) in malls, complexes and hotels.

UVSS will help detect the presence of explosives and IEDs in vehicles by scanning the vehicle’s bottom part.

The proposal will be suggested at a meeting to be held with owners of malls and complexes in the city shortly, a senior police officer told DC.
UVSS is part of the four-layer security measure that city police will propose to the owners.

Coupled with a licence plate recognition (LPR) camera and a surveillance team to monitor the cameras, it would be a complete set-up, a top officer said.

Setting up traffic bollards at vehicle entry and exit points will also be advised. While a few star hotels have such systems already in place, it is imperative for all complexes to install them, say the police.

Perimeter security, access control and physical checks are the other aspects and we advocate trained personnel to be employed for these services.

After all, it’s their premises and they have to ensure top-notch security for people who access their places, the officer said.

Ever since the twin blasts on May 1 at Chennai Central station, security at important spots in the city have become a matter of concern among the city police who held a slew of meetings with railway authorities and state security agencies to provide the city with fool-proof security.

While similar meetings were held at the start of the year with all stakeholder - ranging from IT majors, malls, theatres, school managements, for security enhancement, to cab operators and even tenant verification to check criminal antecedents, the recent meetings are important, especially in the wake of the blasts.
