History Lesson: BJP retracts after Modi tweet
New Delhi: Expressing his displeasure over certain states planning to include a chapter on him in the school curriculum, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday tweeted, “... India has a rich history of several stalwarts who made India what it is today. Young minds should read about these greats and emulate them.”
After Mr Modi’s tweets, the three BJP-ruled states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan decided to drop the idea of of incorporating the story of Mr Modi’s life in school textbooks across the state.
After receiving a call from the PM on Friday morning, Gujarat education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said Mr Modi told him that “it is not appropriate to include life and events of a living person in the school syllabus. He was not happy with the idea of teaching his life in primary schools. He asked us not to go ahead with that project.”
On Thursday, Mr Chudasama had announced that important chapters of Mr Modi’s life will be included in the textbooks of primary schools to teach leadership skills to the next generation. After Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan government also decided to drop the plan to include Prime Minister Modi’s life story in its school syllabus.
Rajasthan education minister Kali Charan Saraf had earlier in May said he would consider incorporating Mr Modi’s biography in school text books if he became the PM.
