First session of 16th Lok Sabha to start from June 4
New Delhi: The Union government on Thursday decided to convene the first Session of the 16th Lok Sabha from June 4, that will last till June 11. President Pranab Mukherjee is likely to address a joint sitting of both Houses on June 9 when he will lay out the government’s agenda.
The 16th Lok Sabha session will begin with the oath-taking of newly-elected members, that will take place on June 4 and 5, after which the Speaker will be elected on June 6. The Rajya Sabha Session will begin on June 9 after the joint sitting. Senior Congress MP Kamal Nath will be the pro-tem Speaker, who will administer the oath to new members. A panel of chairmen, comprising Arjun Charan Sethi (BJD), Purno A. Sangma (National People’s Party) and Biren Singh Engti (Congress) will assist the pro-tem Speaker.
Parliamentary affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu made these announcements about the session after a meeting of the Union Cabinet, which as chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday morning. “We are studying various precedents while discussing the issue. There is still time to take that call.” Mr Naidu said when asked whether Congress would be given the post of the Leader of Opposition despite not having the numbers.
