Badaun gangrape: Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav, will arrest of culprits deliver justice?
Lucknow/New Delhi: Terming the gangrape and murder of two Dalit sisters in Badaun as "unfortunate", Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav ordered the police to arrest all the accused immediately and said a fast-track court should be constituted to ensure that they were duly punished.
The CM also sanctioned financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the victims.
As outrage spread over the horrific gang rape of two Dalit sisters in the district, authorities on Friday, sacked two constables in connection with the crime even as police arrested another accused in the case.
The action came three days after the girls were gangraped and their bodies were found hanging from a tree. SP Atul Kumar Saxena said the services of two constables Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav have been terminated.
"One more accused Awadhesh Yadav has been arrested by the police," he said.
Of the seven wanted in the case, three (policeman Sarvesh Yadav and brothers Pappu and Awadhesh Yadav) have been arrested so far, he said. Sarvesh and Pappu were arrested on Thursday.
Four others Urvesh Yadav (brother of Pappu and Awadhesh), policeman Chhatrapal Yadav and two unidentified persons are at large. The two girls, who were cousins and aged 14 and 15, went missing from their house on the night of May 27 and their bodies were found hanging from a mango tree in the village in Ushait area the next morning.
The incident had triggered protests in the area with villagers alleging police apathy, following which an FIR was registered against seven persons.
The postmortem report of the two girls confirmed that they were raped before murder, Saxena had said. Sarvesh and Chhatrpal have been booked under section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC, while the three brothers, Pappu, Awadhesh and Urvesh, and two others have been booked under Section 302 (murder) and 376 (rape) of IPC.
Akhilesh, who was reviewing the progress of the case with DGP AL Banerjee and other senior officials, said such incidents should not be repeated at any cost, according to official sources.
Coming down heavily on the police, the Chief Minister said the case was "unfortunate" and all accused should be arrested immediately. He said a fast-track court should be constituted to ensure that the accused get due punishment, the sources said.
He also said that the families of the victims should be given security as well as all necessary help, they added.
The Uttar Pradesh government has sent a report to the Home Ministry on the gangrape and murder of two Dalit sisters in Badaun, saying that some arrests have been made and all the guilty in the case will be punished.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh was briefed by officials on the outrageous incident on Tuesday when the two teenaged girl were gangraped and their bodies hung from a tree.
Singh was informed that the UP government has sent a report to the Home Ministry, saying some persons involved in the crime have been arrested and all guilty will be punished, according to official sources.
The state government also given details about the incident.
The sources said Home Ministry officials were in regular touch with the state authorities and have asked them to ensure all those involved in the case were brought to book at the earliest.

Bedi tweeted, ‘Gangraped sisters of village Katra Shadat Kunj, Dist Badaun were raped by a Yadav family. Cops of police post who failed to respond dismissed.’
‘CM UP asking for fast track justice. Before that he needs to work on prevention! His policing is grossly inadequate and inefficient on ground,’ she further tweeted.
Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar tweeted, ‘Minors raped and hung on a tree Sheer brutality there for all to see Families cry till their tears run dry.’
