Jayalalithaa cash gift to needy transport workers as part of May Day fete

Chennai: AIADMK supremo and chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Wednesday gave away cash awards of Rs 50,000 each to 106 needy transport workers belonging to the transport wing of the Anna Thozhir Sangam Peravai (ATSP) as part of the annual May Day celebrations of the party.

For the past several years, AIADMK workers’ unions have been helping the needy workers with financial help to commemorate the spirit of May Day.

“As part of the celebrations, we had already identified 106 workers for this year’s awards spanning across all the district wings with two members from each wing of the union in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” ATSP officials said.

Jayalalithaa who received a warm welcome at her party office on Avvai Shanmugam Salai handed over the awards to a rousing reception. The distribution of funds were postponed this year due to the Lok Sabha elections that were held in the state last month.
