Cyber crime hits women the most

Many marriage proposals fail as girls’ pictures are linked to porn

Hyderabad: A steep increase in the number of women complainants at cyber crime police stations here indicates that women are targeted by cyber crooks. Hyderabad and Cyberabad police crime records of the last 10 months show a two-fold increase in cyber stalking, abusive emails, SMSs, and phone calls, and social media-related crime, in which a substantial number of victims are young women. “Cyberspace is now a place where vindictive ex-boyfriends and ‘rejected guys’ take out their wrath on the girls,” a cyber police official said.

In Swaroopa’s case, she suspects the culprit must be someone whose advances she had rejected in the past. But she would know for sure only if the offender is traced.
But many women do not want to lodge a complaint with the police fearing a “messy” outcome. Instead, they want the police to tackle the accused without issuing an FIR, so that they can avoid going to court, which they fear could harm their reputation.

“Often, we trace the offender and warn him without booking a case,” said a senior police official from Cyberabad.

Hyderabad Central Crime Station (CCS) officials said that the social media site Facebook is cooperating with the city police. If it is approached with an official request from an officer of the level of a deputy commissioner of police, Facebook removes the offensive pages.

“With the help of service providers, we are also tracing the offenders faster than before. So no one can get away with the offence they commit in cyberspace,” said Pala Raju, DCP of the Cyber Crime Space.
