Draw puts Telangana, Andhra MPs in a fix
Hyderabad: Absurd as it may sound, Telangana Rashtra Samiti leader K. Kesava Rao may end up being listed as a Rajya Sabha member from Seemandhra, and Dr K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, a strong votary of United Andhra Pradesh, could be listed as a Rajya Sabha member from Telangana.
This could well be the outcome of a proposed draw of lots on Wednesday to allocate 18 Rajya Sabha seats to Telangana and Seemandhra, as mandated in the AP Reorganisation Act.
The lots will be drawn at a special meeting convened by Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari at 11.30 am on Wednesday. Shocked at the improbable outcome, Rajya Sabha members are rushing to Delhi.
The statehood Act gives seven of undivided Andhra Pradesh’s 18 Rajya Sabha seats to Telangana, and 11 to Seemandhra.
Ironically, as per the present strength, including the vacancy caused by the death of Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy, there are nine Rajya Sabha members hailing from Telangana, and eight from Seemandhra; Mr Jairam Ramesh belongs to neither region.
With the numbers being so, the draw of lots could see MPs belonging to one region being assigned to the other, and vice versa.
