Google doodle celebrates 107th birthday of marine biologist Rachel Louise Carson

Carson published her first book "Under the Sea-Wind: A Naturalist's Picture of Ocean Life" in 1941

Mumbai: Google on Tuesday celebrated the 107th birthday of American marine biologist and author Rachel Louise Carson with a doodle.

In the doodle, Carson is standing at a riverside with a pair of binoculars around her neck and a notebook in her hand. The blue illustration shows Carson surrounded by a variety of sea creatures and birds, highlighting her love for nature.

Born in Pennsylvania in 1907, Carson was originally an aquatic biologist before she became a full-time nature writer in the 1950s.

Carson published her first book "Under the Sea-Wind: A Naturalist's Picture of Ocean Life" in 1941, and second book, "The Sea Around Us", in 1951.

Carson's achievements in marine biology and ecology have led to her work being credited with advancing the global environmental movement, a term which deals with addressing environmental issues.

Her research in Silent Spring also led to a nationwide ban of pesticide DDT, a chemical which she thought to be environmentally negative.

She died of a heart attack in 1964, aged 56 in Maryland after prolonged weakness due to treatment for breast cancer.
