Vellore administration asked to be monsoon-ready
Vellore: District collector Dr R. Nandagopal on Monday called for an urgent meeting of government officials to take preventive measures to save people and cattle from natural calamities that might arise during the south west monsoon.
He asked officials of the town and village panchayats of the district, Vellore Corporation Commiss ioner and PWD officials to remove encroachments by people living very close to lakes and tanks in the district. This would help the rain water flow easily into the lakes and tanks.
The collector also asked officials to rectify the areas where there was a possibility for rain water to stagnate. Dr Nandagopal also asked the assistant director of health to keep in reserve a stock of medicines required if natural calamities occurred and to keep ambulances and generator sets of the hospital in working condition.
He asked the distribution officials to take correct accounts of the fertile lands, if affected by the monsoon. He also asked them to keep in reserve the Public Distribution System’s provisions in stock to distribute to the people if affected by the monsoon.
The meeting was attended by DRO K.Balaraman, DRDA director N. Srinivasan, Vellore commissioner Janaki, RDOs Pattabiraman (Vellore), Dr Priyadarshini (Ranipettai), joint director, animal husbandry Kamalanathan, deputy director general Dr Manoharan, CEO Subramani, assistant social welfare officer Gomathy and PWD engineers.
