Doctor may get to pump up health
New Delhi: Despite the growth in the recent times, the Indian healthcare sector needs a major revamp. While Dr Harsh Vardhan, tipped to be the Union health minister, will have his hands full dealing with the challenges in the health sector, affordable healthcare and universal healthcare should be on his agenda.
The pending bills in Parliament, like the proposed Mental Healthcare Bill, 2012 that broadens the definition of mental illness and recommends decriminalisation of suicide, along with a proposal to ban Electro-Convulsive Treatment (ECT) for minors as well as its direct application to adults are a challenge before him.
The Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill that gives powers like removal of the president, fixing the tenure of presidents etc. to the government, also has to be taken up on priority.
