Tycoon Poroshenko wins Ukraine vote in first round: partial results

Petro Poroshenko won Ukraine's presidential election in the first round

Kiev: Pro-Western billionaire Petro Poroshenko won Ukraine's presidential election in the first round with 54.06 percent of the vote, partial results released Monday by the central elections commission showed.

Former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko trailed in distant second with less 13.12 percent of the vote, the election commission said with 37.66 percent of the ballots counted.

Nationalist lawmaker Oleh Lyashko was third with 8.49 percent.

A June 15 runoff between the top two finishers is avoided if any of the candidates breaks the 50-percent threshold.

The central election commission is expected to declare Poroshenko the winner of Sunday's election, which was held despite voting being disrupted in parts of the separatist east, later on Monday.
