New Delhi: With a view to oppose the move of the earlier government to lower the age of the child to 16 years, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights is expected to recommend the new government not to lower the age of the child.
While the earlier minister of Women and Child Development (WCD) had proposed amendments in the Juvenile Justice Act whereby juveniles between 16 and 18 years involved in a heinous crime should be tried as an adult under the law.
The NCPCR had decided that the definition of juvenile, should not be lowered to 16 years, a stance which will be conveyed to the new government. “With the new government coming, the issue may come up again. The matter will be taken up with the government,” NCPCR chief Kushal Singh, said.
