London: A controversial ring belonging to Tipu Sultan has been sold at Christie's auction house for 145,000 pounds.
The jeweled golden ring, belonging to the 18th Century Muslim ruler in India, was inscribed with the name of the Hindu God Ram in raised Devenagri script, and has been sold at an auction in London amid criticism from heritage groups, the BBC reported.
According to Christie's website, the 41.2g ring was sold for almost 10 times its estimated price to an undisclosed bidder.
It is believed that the ring was taken from his slain body by a British general at the end of the 1799 Srirangappattinam battle he fought against the British East India Company's forces.
