Hair styling with bejewelled accessories
It’s always good to do things differently, especially when making a fashion statement. These days, multi-purpose jewellery trends are being endorsed by fashion icons like Sarah Jessica Parker, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, etc. who were spotted wearing neckpieces as hair accessories at various red carpet events. Clearly, this piece of regular jewellery doubles up as a precious hair accessory.
When hair plays a vital role in enhancing a women’s beauty, how can you leave out jewels as possible adornments? Turn back the pages of history and you’ll find that queens enhanced their hairdos with ornaments. Modern women too are taking traditional jewellery like kundan sets and sleek diamond neckpieces to quirk up their hairdo, says Sachi Singh, executive director at Motiwala and Sons jewellery. She says, “One can take a diamond or gold chain and tie it (from back to front) on loosely worn hair, which looks very chic. A second option is the side motif for example, if you are wearing a traditional Indian outfit, take your kundan or polki neckpieces and tie it on one side of your hair to give it an elegant finish. If you are wearing a Western outfit, then use a modern diamond set on one side of your hair and team it with a messy side bun. If you have neckpieces with bigger central motifs then use it to accentuate the high bun or pin it up at the back of your head and leave the hair loose. If you are teaming your outfit with a side braid, use gold chains as a spiral around your braid and you can also add some stone earrings or studs to highlight the look.”
Stylist and fashion writer Nidhi Sharma says that it’s time to dress up your hair in creative ways. She says, “Statement necklaces are slowing becoming hair accessories for today’s fashion-forward women. However, while doing so, make sure to keep the ends in place by pinning and adding a small amount of hairspray. One can simply accessorise an updo with a necklace from your jewellery box by weaving the chain into a braid or a high chignon bun. Also take a break from the norm and go for stylish ornaments that can be worn as a neckpiece or as headgear. Metallic or silver chains, gold filigree jewellery, vintage gunmetal or ornamental jewellery can be used to make a statement hair piece.”
Stylist and image consultant Vikram Seth feels that more fashionistas will soon follow this trend, as young women are open to experimenting with unconventional ideas. He says, “The idea of multi-purpose jewellery is gaining favour among fashion followers. People like to wear their favourite pieces again, and wearing them innovatively is a smart thing to do. One can use delicate platinum and silver chains with Western outfits or updos, and gold or colourful jewellery can be used with ethnic garments for occasions like weddings, festivals.”
Jewellery designer Musskan Agarwaal also agrees that neckpieces as headgear are the next big thing in jewellery trend. She says, “Using a neckpiece as a headgear is one statement piece that looks fabulous and makes you look good. Today’s generation wants to experiment, at the same time not repeating stuff at the same gathering. Wearing a short neckpiece as headgear, a pendant neckpiece as tikka, and a chain neckpiece as a more elaborate headgear these are the major trends.
Neckpieces with colourful stones, defined cuts, sharp tribal figurines, natural motifs blended with soft candy colours as headgear are instant hits.”
