Members ditched Congress, didn't vote for their own party
Hyderabad: The number of APCC members and votes bagged by the Congress just don’t add up, a comparison revealed.
As per the APCC records, it has 35 lakh party members in the state. Out of that, in the 13 districts of Seemandhra, there are over 13 lakh Congress members. And, on an average, every Assembly constituency has 40,000 members.
Each Assembly constituency, again, is divided into two blocks and the party leaders are required to ensure that each block has a minimum 20,000 members. But in the recent Assembly elections, it was found out the Congress candidates polled below 10,000 votes in most Assembly segments and even below 5,000 in many others.
According to the APCC estimates, in every Assembly constituency, the Congress candidates must get at least 40,000 votes from party members.
Even former ministers didn’t fare better. In fact, in over 100 Assembly seats, the Congress candidates got less than 5,000 votes.
The dismal numbers are a pointer of the fact that the Congress candidates did not get votes of their own party members. Due to this, around 150 Congress candidates, including former ministers and the Assembly speaker in Seemandhra, lost their deposits.
In Tenali Assembly segment in Guntur district, former Assembly Speaker Nadendla Man-ohar got 15,511 votes.
In parliamentary constituencies too, the numbers were low. Only two candidates, one in Kurnool and another in Vizianagaram, were fortunate enough to receive 1,00,000 votes.
