Lahore court hauls up Nawaz Sharif
Islamabad: A Pakistani court on Tuesday issued notices to 63 politicians, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former President Asif Ali Zardari and Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan for allegedly possessing foreign assets.
“The Lahore High Court, during a court hearing of a petition filed to bring back the politicians’ foreign assets to Pakistan, issued the notices”, said a court official.
The petition, filed by barrister Javed Iqbal Jafri, asserts that the politicians’ assets illegally transferred to foreign countries should be brought back to free the country of external debt.
The court bench, headed by Justice Khalid Mahmood, issued notices to 63 politicians for submitting their replies.
The politicians included PM Sharif, Mr Zardari, Imran Khan and Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain among others.
The court also ordered to notify the respondents through advertisements and adjourned the hearing till June 16.
The petition was originally filed in 1996 against 26 politicians. Barrister Jafri later amended the petition, adding 40 more names to it.
