Married couple denied hall ticket
Chennai: Can a wedlock while pursing studies be an impediment? A private engineering college thought so forcing two of its professional undergraduate students, who married recently, to knock on the doors of the Madras High Court.
The duo, studying second year B.E (civil engineering) at Pavai College of Technology in Namakkal, were denied hall tickets for the fourth semester examination allegedly after the management came to know about the love marriage.
In the writ petition, S. Pradeepa 20, of Narasothipatty, Salem, had submitted that she had embraced Islam and married her classmate J. Fazil, 20, of Ammapet, Salem, on April 12, 2014. The wedding was solemnised as per Shariat and a marriage certificate was obtained from the government qazi. Her name was changed to Ayeesha a day before the wedding.
Counsel for the petitioner, G. Mohanakrishnan, contended, “Pradeepa alias Ayeesha paid necessary exam fees for the fourth semester examination. The college management came to know about her marriage with Fazil and refused to issue hall ticket. This was done despite the two attending classes regularly.”
