Militants kill jawan in Valley

The Indian Army found five Pakistan-made landmines in Khour area of Akhnoor

Srinagar: An Army jawan was killed and three others wounded in a landmine blast triggered by militants and subsequent alleged firing from across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Akhnoor area on Sunday, officials said in Jammu on Monday.

In another incident, a Territorial Army jawan was killed and three other soldiers injured when militants hiding in a village in Budgam district opened fire on security forces as they arrived to launch a cordon-and-search operation on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Army found five Pakistan-made landmines in Khour area of Akhnoor.

“So far, five landmines have been detected and recovered from the area. IEDs are Pak-originated and planted apparently to target Indian soldiers during their patrolling of the area,” a defence spokesperson in Jammu said.

The Army also foiled an infiltration bid by a group of three heavily-armed militants in neighbouring Poonch district earlier on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, a 5-year-old girl was killed and two other children were critically injured when a littered shell exploded near Tosemaedan in Budgam district on Monday.

The victims were fiddling with the device in Khag area of the meadow that is used by the Army as a firing range since 1965, when the explosive went off. The lease of the meadow to the Army ended in April.
