Lord of the smart ring

23 year-old invents a device that literally puts everything on your fingertips

In Kochi, Kerala, the 20-something group of youngsters at RHL Vision, headed by N. Rohildev, are beaming. Their firm is behind what can be described as the idea of the year and it’s called the Fin and yes, it’s wearable and quite nifty. Fin allows individuals to make digital interactions as natural as possible — a gadget that can be worn on the thumb to make the whole palm, a digital interface.

“People today worry about time management, but still waste a lot of their time on devices. Fin removes this interaction gap by allowing users to quickly interact with their devices. A normal person takes out his phone from his pocket at an average 150 times a day, Fin can reduce this number because it’s a universal controller for all smart devices,” explains Rohildev.

The technology recognises each segment of the finger biometrically — that means different functions can be assigned to each finger segment. It makes for endless options —answering a call, changing TV channels, switching the music. For the visually-impaired, Fin offers several advantages: reading out a message, calling someone, asking for directions — all with a few taps and swipes of the finger in thin air!

Rohildev talks about how they came up with the idea, “Existing devices are mixing both wearable tech and touch-less technology and making it more complex for users. We wanted to make the interaction natural and we found the thumb is easily accessible to all other fingers. That’s why a ring you can wear on your thumb.” The Fin was also crowdfunded.

“We had to spread awareness about the technology and I got a splendid chance to introduce Fin to Indiegogo Campaign through TechCrunch Hardware Battlefield. We hit 202 per cent of our target goal ($202,547 USD) from 1,611 funders and we got a total demand for 2,500 units of Fin.”

But the young team is not resting. “We now have a corporate office at Palo Alto in California and we dream of a world where technology runs in the palm of your hand. We also have a passion to change the way humans interact with technology,” says Rohildev.
