38 candidates of Congress lose deposit
Chennai: The Congress party in Tamil Nadu perhaps ought to worry more than drawing a blank in the state in the 16th Lok Sabha poll.
In suffering one of worst ever poll drubbings, in which 38 of the 39 Congress candidates forfeited deposit, first of its kind in a Lok Sabha poll, the party has also lost its long held status fourth largest party in Tamil Nadu a position it conveniently manipulated to arm twist and steal more seats from regional partners in the past.
Going it alone in all 39 constituencies in one of the most difficulty fought general elections ever, the Congress party managed to finish a distant sixth, three places below its archrival Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), which has jumped four places higher to finish at third position.
Congress has secured a meager 4.3 per cent votes, as against BJP’s 5.5 per cent.
The same BJP was limping at 2.34 per cent in the past before the ‘tsunamo’ swept others and lifted the saffron brigade throughout the country this time. The same Congress had secured 15.3 per cent riding piggyback on estranged ally DMK in 2009 LS elections.
