Godavari Phase-1 Project to link pipes delayed

State Water Board needs Rs 350 crore urgently

Hyderabad: The state government is sitting on a crucial project to interlink the main water distribution pipeline in the city. The cash-starved Water Board requires Rs 350 crore to lay “ring-mains” i.e,. the main distribution pipeline, to supply water to various areas within the city from the Godavari Phase-I project.

The ring-mains of Godavari Phase-I have to be connected with the existing ring-mains of Krishna Phase-I and Phase-II, Manjira, Singur, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar distribution lines so that water from any source can be diverted to any part of the city in case of a pipe burst or any other problem resulting in water not being supplied from any one of the sources.

Though Water Board officials approached the government when K. Rosaiah and Kiran Kumar Reddy were Chief Ministers, the Board did not get the needed financial support. As a result, works that had started for laying the Godavari ring-mains had come to a halt in the preliminary stage itself.

The project will benefit lakhs of citizens of peripheral areas as water supply can be improved from the present once-in-five-day supply to alternate-day supply once Godavari phase-I is commissioned.

The areas that will benefit are in Malkajgiri, Sainikpuri, Secunderabad Cantonment, Kapra, Alwal, Qutbullapur, Kukatpally, Rajendernagar and Serilingampally municipalities.

Water Board engineer-in-chief M. Satyanarayana said two ring-mains under Godavari Phase-I have to be laid from Ghanpur master balancing reservoir in Ranga Reddy district. One line will extend up to Lingampally and another to Alwal and will be connected with existing ring-mains of other sources.

“The state recently provided the counter- guaranty to obtain a Rs 1,000 crore HUDCO loan. There is also the option of seeking money from the state government of Telangana,” said an official.
