BSP at its worst ever performance, leads in three Lok Sabha seats
BSP is leading in just three Lok Sabha seats which is the worst performance ever
New Delhi: The Mayawati led BSP is staring into a disastrous defeat in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha elections. With the party leading in just three Lok Sabha seats, the famed social engineering of Ms Mayawati seems to have been blown over by the "development" juggernaut of BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi. In 2009 BSP had won 19 seats and this time may not even touch double figure.
Though Ms Mayawati had ensured that her Dalit constituency remained intact in the 2012 UP Assembly election when the Samajwadi Party had registered an emphatic win, she has a lot to worry as her core vote base, Jatavs, seem to have also broken, with a sizeable section of them having voted for the BJP. Though elders within the Jatavs have remained loyal to Ms Mayawati, the young lots among them have broken off to flock to the BJP in the hope of better job prospects.
The famed social engineering of the BSP had upper castes and Dalits along with smaller castes as the support base of the BSP. But the upper castes deserted her in an unprecedented way, while the smaller castes too left her for the BJP to leave the BSP high and dry in the 2014 elections.
