Intex launches an affordable yet powerful Android phone

The Intex Aqua i 5 HD is a sub-10K quad-core phone

New Delhi: Homegrown handset maker Intex launched a new handset 'Aqua i5 HD' for Rs 9,990, expanding its presence in the burgeoning sub-Rs 10,000 smartphone category. The handset is powered by the Android JellyBean operating system, but will receive an update for the latest KitKat OS by June-end.

"This is one of the finest smartphone in the sub-Rs 10,000 league in the Indian smartphone market. There is a lot of activity that you see in this category. We will continue to bring innovative devices in this hugely popular category," Intex Business Head (Mobile division) Sanjay Kumar Kalirona told PTI.

The dual-SIM handset is powered by a 1.3 GHz quad core processor and features a 5-inch HD and OGS display, 1 GB RAM and 4 GB built-in memory (expandable upto 32 GB). The smartphone is equipped with a 13MP rear and 5MP front camera with geo-tagging facility, 2,000 mAh battery and comes with preloaded apps and cloud storage of 5GB.

"We launched Aqua i5 HD at below Rs 10k price tag. We aim to strengthen connect with consumers while we understand their needs and constantly innovate to meet the aspirations at an affordable price point," he said.

Last year, Intex said it sold 11.5 million handsets of which, smartphones contributed over 1.5 million. Intex, which also makes IT products and peripherals, has launched 32 mid-segment smartphones under its Aqua range and has plans to launch around eight more models during the next quarter.

The company also plans to launch a 4.5-inch Aqua 15 HD Mini next week. Kalirona, however, declined to comment on product details. The Aqua i5 HD handset will come bundled with Tata Docomo data pack of 3GB for three months.
