US remains silent on Narendra Modi’s visa status
New Delhi/ Washington: Even though US president Barack Obama has said that he is looking forward to working “closely” with the next government in India, the country continued to maintain silence on granting a visa to BJP leader Narendra Modi, whose party-led NDA is projected by exit polls to form the next government.
“We don’t speak on visa acceptances, applications. We view our relationship with India as one that’s important for economic, strategic reasons, and one that we look forward to continuing to grow in the future,” US state department spokesperson Jen Psaki said on Monday.
“We look forward to the formation of a new government once election results are announced and to working closely with India’s next administration to make the coming years equally transformative,” Mr Obama had said on Monday.
The BJP on Tuesday welcomed Mr Obama’s statement and said that all countries will cooperate with the new government in New Delhi.
“What Obama says shows in which direction the wind is blowing. All the democracies and all the countries in the world will definitely cooperate with the new government,” said BJP leader Prakash Javadekar.
