Congress to look for major revamp if it fares poorly in elections
New Delhi: With the results of the 2014 general election to be out on May 16, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday met President Pranab Mukherjee for consultations. In case there is a hung Parliament, which the Congress predicts, the President will have to play a crucial role.
But if exit poll predictions are close to accurate and a Modi government takes power at the Centre, there could be major organisational changes in the Congress soon.
Despite the exit poll prediction of a clear NDA sweep, the Congress camp remains optimistic as its leaders feel that even if the party “gets around 150 seats it cannot be called a poor performance under the circumstances”.
The Rahul Gandhi team, however, is not too upset, as it feels this would provide an opportunity to “weed out the deadwood” in the party.
But in the event the Congress scores below 100 seats, there could be a desperate clamour for a bigger role for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and she would be expected to help her brother to revive the party. Sources said that if a Narendra Modi government was in power, Team Rahul was likely to take charge and “overhaul” the party .
