Two held for planning to loot hawala cash
Hyderabad: Task Force sleuths on Tuesday arrested two persons over the possession of a 7.65 calibre pistol and live rounds.
Police said the duo were attempting to spot and rob businessmen carrying out hawala transactions in the Begum Bazaar area. The duo is also believed to have assumed that due to the illegal nature of hawala transactions, their victims would avoid reporting the crimes to the police.
The two arrested have been identified as Deepak Kumar and C. Madhu. They have been handed over to local police for further action.
According to Task Force police officials, Madhu was already involved in a dacoity case and had spent time in prison. Officials claim it was in prison that he learnt about hawala transactions taking place in areas such as Begum Bazaar. He then came in contact with Deepak, who acquired the weapon from a contact in Dehradun.
Madhu promised Deepak 50 per cent of the loot and sought the latter’s help for the planned robberies.
“They thought that if they loot a person with hawala money, the victim wouldn’t go to the police. So there wouldn’t be any pressure on them,” K.V. Surya Prakash Rao, inspector, South Zone Task Force, said.
The two were nabbed based on intel from informants. However, at this stage, police is charging the duo only for the possession of an illegal weapon, without licence.
