Andhra municipal results: Congress wipes out TRS in Telangana, Naidu wins Seemandhra
Hyderabad: The Telugu Desam has emerged victorious in the urban body polls in Seemandhra where the Congress seems to have been wiped out, with not even a single municipality in its kitty. However, in Telangana, it was the Congress that was a winner.
The TD won 58 municipalities and five corporations. Barring Kadapa and Kurnool, it dominated Seemandhra. The YSRC won 16 municipalities and two corporations. Eighteen towns will have hung civic bodies.
On the whole, the Telugu Desam bagged 1,446 seats (divisions or wards) and the YSR Congress 852, in Seemandhra. Others, mostly Independents, won 120 seats. The Congress stood at the bottom with 55 seats.
In Telangana, the Congress bagged 525 seats and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti 313. Others, including Independents, bagged 355 seats while the Telugu Desam-BJP alliance got only 162 seats.
The TRS won in one corporation and nine municipalities. The Telugu Desam-BJP combine won seven municipalities, and the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) bagged one each. It was a hung House in 19 towns.
Altogether, 10 municipal corporations and 146 municipalities went to the polls on March 30. In Seemandhra, elections were held for seven corporations and 90 municipalities and in Telangana, for three corporations and 56 municipalities.
