Bull owners in Tamil Nadur esorting to distress sales after SC bans 'Jallikattu'
Madurai: With the Supreme court banning 'Jallikattu' (Bull taming) sport, owners of the bulls are resorting to distress sale of their bulls, a functionary of an association engaged in the sport has claimed.
"There is no use for them.We cannot even use them for tilling the land as tractors are available. And as bullock carts are very rare now,we can only sell them for meat" Manikannan, a functionary of the 'Bravery Sports Association' said.
According to Vadipatti Cattle Market broker Sivasamy, bulls are being brought to the market for sale to the Butcher shop.
"The bulls, being trained in the sport, used to sell for prices ranging from Rs.50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh. Now they sell only for Rs.10,000. But now, even the Kerala Meat traders are not showing any interest to buy them," he told PTI.
Manikannan, who had been rearing bulls for more than three decades, said "The taming of bull sport is played only for ten minutes--for each bull. Those who filed the cases are not aware of the nuances of the game, or the way the bulls are brought up like children."
All three urged the state government to seek review of the ban.
