Diesel prices shoot up by Rs 1after elections

Cabinet authorised PSU OMCs did not hike prices in last two months

New Delhi: Diesel prices were hiked by Rs 1.09 a litre (excluding state levies) on Monday as voting for general elections came to an end. Diesel price in Delhi will be hiked by Rs 1.22 a litre after including taxes to Rs 56.71 per litre. Even though last year in January, cabinet had authorised the PSU oil marketing companies (OMCs) to hike diesel prices every month by 40-50 paise a litre, there were no hike on April 1 and May 1.

This was because government didn’t wanted to take an unpopular measure during the general elections. However, PSU oil marketing companies (OMCs) had claimed that the hiked was deferred as revenue losses on diesel had dropped below Rs 6 per litre.
