Results for municipalties and municipal corporations to be declared Monday

Civic elections might reveal voting trend across state

Hyderabad: Political parties in yet-to-be divided Andhra Pradesh are waiting with baited breath for results of municipal, ZPTC and MPTC elections, to be declared next week, to assess the polling trend for general elections to the Assembly. The state election commission will announce results of municipalities and municipal corporations on Monday and ZPTC and MPTC results on Tuesday. Another four days are left for vote-counting for Assembly seats.

Elections to 145 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations were held on March 30 and 1,093 ZPTCs and 16,214 MPTCs on April 6 and 11.Political parties have dubbed the local body elections as prefinals to Assembly elections, which were held on April 30 in Telangana and May 7 in Seemandhra.

Political parties feel the results of local body elections would be an indicator of the voting pattern in general elections, which might do them good to take a cue from and set right areas in which their respective parties are weak.

For that reason, the Supreme Court stayed the announcement of local body results till Assembly elections got over. Voting pattern of urban denizens would be gauged from municipal elections and that of their rural counterparts from ZPTC and MPTC results.

However, many politicos doubt if the results would be an indicator at all. YSR Congress spokesperson Ambati Rambabu said that local body elections are different from Assembly polls for in the former, caste and local leaders influence is comparatively more. However, he added that local body election results would indicate the voting trend.

In fact, in many areas political parties came together at the local level. For instance, the Congress and TD in some areas and YSR Congress and Congress leaders in a few other, supported one candidate.

Congress leader and MLC R. Padma Raju felt local body election results will not repeat in the Assembly elections for local issues and caste-based equation will dominate in the former and general party polices for overall development of state and welfare schemes for people will be deciding factors in the latter. But he did not rule out local body election results indicating the general voting trend, if not indicating similar outcome for Assembly elections.

TD leader Gali Muddu Krishna Naidu differed with Congress and YSR Congress leader’s opinions. He said with a difference of 1 or 2 per cent, local body election results will repeat in the Assembly elections too. He said outcome of municipal, ZPTC and MPTC polls would gauge the mood of urban and rural electorate.

Meanwhile, YSRC opened its account by winning majority director posts in Anantapur District Cooperative Bank (DCCB) and District Cooperative Marketing Society (DCMS) on Sunday.

The key posts of DCCB chairperson and vice-chairman and DCMS chairperson and vice-chairman went to the YSR Congress.
