Arun Jaitley tries to keep Narendra Modi rally issue alive
BJP leader refuted claims that Gujarat cops were against holding the poll rally
New Delhi: Keeping the issue of BJP’s PM nominee Narendra Modi’s Varanasi rally alive on the eve of pollling day, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Sunday refuted claims that senior Gujarat police officials had considered undesirable holding the poll gathering at Benia Bagh in the city.
“This is a factually incorrect statement communicated to election commissioner H.S. Brahma,” Mr Jaitley said, while claiming the state police personnel were being misquoted.
Quoting Gujarat police personnel, who were part of the BJP’s PM candidate’s advance security liaison team, election commissioner H.S. Brahma had earlier said that they had “indicated” the ground chosen for the rally was not a “desirable” place for the VIP to address people.
Refuting this, Mr Jaitley told in a TV interview, “I personally and along with me Amit Shah repeatedly spoke to Gujarat police officers who were there. They went to the district magistrate and said we have no obje-ction, please allow this rally.”
Mr Jaitley also said the reason for the cancellation of the saffron party’s public meeting at Benia Bagh conveyed to the party was that in 1991 there was a problem after a rally and some other reasons being given were “afterthoughts”.
When asked if it was proper to raise questions about the EC, the way Mr Modi had done, Mr Jaitley said, “Everybody uses their own phraseology, even though I did not use the word partisan, Mr Modi did. How do you rationalise a decision or can anyone rationalise a decision that at a particular venue three parties would be allowed, one will not be allowed.” He added that the key issue was fairness and Mr Modi had not been allowed to campaign in his own constituency.
