Centre won’t close December 16 accountability inquiry

New government likely to finalize the findings of the inquiry committee report

New Delhi: In an apparent bid to avoid stirring fresh controversy in the poll season, the government has not closed the inquiry to fix responsibility for the brutal December 16, 2012 gangrape incident in the capital. The task of finalising the findings of the inquiry committee report on fixing accountability is now likely to be left to the new government.

While the inquiry committee had submitted its report almost three months back, it has not been cleared by Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde. Sources said the closure of the inquiry, coming at the time of the LS elections, may trigger fresh trouble for the government as it is giving a clean chit to the police officials who were under the lens for the prevention of the crime and its handling, including delay in the PCR vans reaching the spot and the traffic violations by the moving bus.
