IPL 7 MI vs CSK: Chennai Superkings beat Mumbai Indians by four wickets

Dwayne Smith blows Mumbai Indians to bits as Chennai Kings win again

Mumbai: Chennai Super Kings breached Mumbai Indians’ fortress with convincing four-wicket win at Wankhede stadium here on Saturday. Dwayne Smith 57 (51b, 5x4, 3x6) scored a match winning half century and Faf du Plesis 31 (24b, 2x4, 1x6) also played a good hand to help CSK chase Mumbai Indians total of 157/6 with ease.

This was seventh win for the two-time Indian Premier League champions ending the 10-match home winning streak for Mumbai Indians, starting last season. The visitors’ bowlers had done their job first by restricting the hosts to a modest score. Ravichandran Ashwin (3/30) spearheaded the bowling attack. His fellow slow bowlers Samuel Badree (1/34) and Ravindra Jadeja (0/33) also tied things in the middle overs but Mumbai for a change kept wickets in hand.

However barring Ishwar Pandey’s (0/34) last over that yielded 18 runs the hosts couldn’t score freely. Mohit Sharma (1/26) was again economical.

Mumbai started with yet another new opening combination of C.M. Gautam and Lendyl Simmons but it didn’t work again. Ambati Rayudu 59 (43, 2x4, 4x6) anchored the innings and shared decent partnerships with Simmons 38 (38b, 3x4, 2x6) and skipper Rohit Sharma 19 (19b) to provide a launch pad for big hitting.

Mumbai reached 42/1 in six overs but the progress slowed as Simmons and Rohit found the going tough before throwing away decent starts. Pollard came in the 17th over and lasted one ball as he holed out in the deep prompting bowler Ashwin to break into an Usain Bolt celebratory pose. Anderson hit two sixes in last over to finish with six-ball 18. Mumbai Indians gave Praveen Kumar and Simmons their first games.
