Tamil Nadu gets surplus rains
Chennai: With rains continuing to hit Tamil Nadu, the state moved out of the deficit rainfall category this summer. Together with the 25.6 mm mean rainfall recorded on Thursday, the state has so far received 27 per cent excess rains at 98.4 mm compared to 77.5 mm for the period starting March 1 to May 8. With weathermen expecting rains to continue for a couple of days, the state might end up with very good pre-monsoon rainfall season.
“The low pressure system is still over north coastal Kerala. Though we don’t expect it to intensify into a depression, we still have to wait and watch. The possibilities of it developing into a cyclone are remote,” said Area Cyclone Warning centre director S. R. Ramanan. According to him, many places in interior Tamil Nadu would receive good rains whereas it would rain in only a fewer places in coastal TN for the next few days.
For a 24-hours period-ended 8.30 am on Thursday, Ramanathapuram in Ramanathapuram district recorded the maximum rainfall in the state at 13 cm, followed by Chidambaram in Cuddalore district and Coonoor in Nilgiris district recording 12 cm rains each. Kamudhi in Ramanathapuram district, and Kanyakumari in Kanyakumari district registered 11 cm rains each.
In Chennai, Nungambakkam recorded 1.2 mm rainfall, while Meenambakkam registered 2.4 mm rains. While the cloud cover was present over the city for most part of the time, the maximum temperature levels have gradually begun to increase.
Chennai recorded relatively higher temperature levels compared to the districts with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam registering 33.7 degree Celsius and 34 degree Celsius respectively on Thursday.
